About the Founder of Heretic
“My mother was an avid gardener and used to drag me along with her to garden centers. To keep me from wandering off, she started a game with me — if I could remember the name of a plant by its scent, she’d give me a quarter. I LOVED this game (partly because it was fun and partly because I wanted all the quarters), and by the time I was seven I had a plant vocabulary that most adults don’t have. Little did she know that this game would turn into a lifelong obsession.” – DL
Heretic Founder/Perfumer Douglas Little went on to study graphic design, and by the age of twenty was working in the beauty industry as a creative and product developer. His passion for plants persisted, and he began diving deep into the world of perfumery and studying with a natural perfumer. At the same time, he was beginning to question the beauty industry he was working in after seeing firsthand how potentially toxic many ingredients contained in these products were. This is where the motivation to start his own company began. He wanted to ignite people’s passion for fragrance by showing them a different world of perfume — a natural one that comes with a true understanding of real plant essences and their powers.
Fast-forward to 2010, Douglas was asked to speak on a panel about emerging trends in the beauty industry, where he was outspoken about his preference for natural fragrance vs. synthetic. A debate ensued in which he was told “natural perfumery is nothing more than the work of housewives and heretics.” He promptly trademarked the name “Heretic” and began his bold journey to build the brand he envisioned.
Frank Zappa said it best: Without deviation from the norm, progress is not possible. “I didn’t want to create a collection of ‘safe-synthetic’ or ‘clean’ fragrances, I wanted to create 100% natural fragrances. What’s the difference? Natural fragrance is a completely different experience than synthetic. It’s sheer, vibrant, and alive, and has the ability to go beyond the cosmetic department. Natural fragrance materials are exponentially more expensive than synthetics, harder to obtain, and more difficult to work with, however it was all of those reasons that led me to want to work with them and to share my crazy passion for these magical ingredients. About the Founder of Mineral
I spent the summer of 2016 in Peru. The trip was billed as a self exploration and deep dive into my wellbeing. somewhere amongst a seemingly happy and healthy life I had gone astray.
In July I summited the 19k ft. Mt. Pisco in the Andes mountains, insatiable for an epiphany. Nothing came but below summit I contracted an amoeba parasite. The parasite attacked my lower intestine, causing it to inflame and wrap around my colon. Unable to eat or drink, I lost 30 lbs. in 3 days.
After refusing advances to remove my colon from Peruvian and American doctors I found refuge in a variety of plant medicines. Pumpkin, garlic, and charcoal to kill the parasite with copious amounts of cannabis oil to reduce the inflammation in my lower intestine.
In healing myself with plant medicines I stumbled upon that epiphany. My friend and business partner, Haris Fazlani, created MINERAL shortly after I returned from Peru. Our opportunity to reintroduce our community to plant medicines quickly became our calling and with an extensive amount of hours in the creative space we treated MINERAL like a client, emerging ourselves in cannabis.
For 18 months we grew hemp, extracted oil, and formulated product. After creating the thesis on which we would build MINERAL, we released our first product in December of 2017: a sublingual hemp oil to reduce inflammation. Our company has grown but our commitment to maintaining the plant remains unchanged.
