ACUPUNCTURE IS JUST ONE TOOL IN AN L.AC.’S BELT. THESE HOLISTIC HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS ARE TRAINED IN TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE (TCM) WHICH INCLUDES THE MODALITIES OF ACUPUNCTURE, BODY WORK, CUPPING, GUA SHA (SCRAPING), ELECTRICAL STIMULATION, HERBAL FORMULATION, AND MORE. GUIDING THE EMPLOYMENT OF THESE TRADE CRAFTS IS A SYSTEM BASED ON THE TWO OPPOSING FORCES OF YIN AND YANG. HARMONIZING THE TWO IN THE BODY IS ACHIEVED BY AFFECTING THE FLOW OF QI (OFTEN TRANSLATED AS ENERGY) RUNNING IN PATHWAYS KNOWN AS MERIDIANS. THIS ANCIENT PRACTICE HAS RECEIVED INCREASING ATTENTION IN THE WEST IN THE LAST DECADE AS STUDIES CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THAT REGULAR ACUPUNCTURE IS A COST EFFECTIVE WAY TO HEAL THE BODY AND PREVENT DISEASE.
